“There is compelling evidence to suggest a causal relationship between diet and chronic diseases. More recently, ‘oxidative stress’ has been implicated as an important causative agent of several chronic diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. Oxidative stress is induced by the formation of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) through normal metabolic activity and through life style factors including the diet. Being very highly reactive, ROS have the ability to interact with critical cellular components such as lipids, proteins and DNA and cause cellular damage. Oxidation of the cellular components is thought to be an important initial stage in the initiation and progression of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Antioxidants have the ability to interact with ROS and mitigate their damaging effects.”

The blood cholesterol-lowering properties of dietary saponins are of particular interest in human nutrition. One of the most prominent research programs on this subject was that of Dr. Rene Malinow at the Oregon Regional Primate Center, whose research (published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1997) demonstrated unequivocally the cholesterol-lowering properties of saponins. This desirable effect is achieved by the binding of bile acids and cholesterol by saponins. Bile acids form mixed micelles (molecular aggregates) with cholesterol, facilitating its absorption. Cholesterol is continually secreted into the intestine via the bile, with much of it subsequently reabsorbed. Saponins cause a depletion of body cholesterol by preventing its reabsorption, thus increasing its excretion, in much the same way as other cholesterol-lowering drugs, such as cholestyramine.

He goes on to say in the same article…

"The binding of bile acids by saponins has other important implications. Bile acids excreted in the bile are called primary bile acids. They are metabolized by bacteria in the colon, producing secondary bile acids. Some of the secondary bile acids are promoters of colon cancer. By binding to primary bile acids, saponins reduce the formation of the secondary bile acids. Research at the University of Toronto has shown that feeding saponins to laboratory animals reduced the number of preneoplastic colon lesions in mice. The Canadian researchers also found that saponins had a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on growth of human carcinoma cells in culture."

“Improvement in arthritis, 49% felt less pain, stiffness and swelling, the three major complaints of arthritics. This suggests that the normal intestinal flora of beneficial microscopic plant life may indeed be under stress in arthritis patients. The study concludes that yucca extract benefits normal bacterial forms in the alimentary canal.."

Researchers considered it important that"no allergic manifestations appeared". This was not surprising, since yucca has served as a food for thousands of years. This seems to confirm evidence that the active principle, yucca saponin, is not absorbed into the blood but works within the small and large intestines. Its benefits are in the improvement and protection of intestinal flora rather than any direct action upon the arthritis.

Since the publication of his original report, Dr. Bingham has continued to use yucca as a food supplement in the treatment of about 2,000 arthritis patients. Other physicians have added the yucca extract to their treatment regimens. Dr. Paul Isaacson of Tucson, Arizona reports that the treatments are relieving the patient's discomfort and sometimes the swelling. I would say that 90% of my patients have gotten relief to some degree... Dr. Robert Elliott of Woodland Hills, Ca says that "about 50% of my patients have gained some relief from arthritis symptoms while taking yucca, and he noted that yucca therapy seems to have a role in reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood.

"Dr. Bingham suggests that yucca saponin may tend to break down the high molecular fats in foods whose absorption contributes to high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, hypertriglyceridemian, and hypercholesterolemia. One of the doctor's most significant findings was that no patient on yucca extract for 6 months or more continued to show an abnormally high blood pressure or excessive blood triglyceride and cholesterol levels. In other words, there were permanent benefits from the period of yucca therapy.”

“Many of these compounds serve as 'natural antibiotics' for the plant but now scientists are looking at how they can help humans fight fungal infections, combat microbes and viruses, boost the effectiveness of certain vaccine and knock out some kinds of tumor cells particularly lung and blood cancers. They can also lower blood cholesterol thereby reducing heart disease. Their natural tendency to ward off microbes may prove to be especially useful for treating those difficult to control fungal and yeast infections."

One of the most exciting prospects for saponins are how they appear to inhibit or kill cancer cells. They may also be able to do it without killing normal cells in the process as is the mode of present cancer-fighting drugs. Cancer cells have more cholesterol-type compounds in their membranes than normal cells. Saponins can bind cholesterol and thus interfere with cell growth and division. While drugs have side effects, many of them serious, saponins are safe.”

“…These results indicate that the anti-inflammatory properties attributed to Yucca schidigera can be ascribed to both resveratrol and Yuccaols and provide the first evidences of the anti-tumor and anti-invasive properties of these novel phenolic compounds.”

“ . . .For years many scientists thought saponins were useless. But according to A. Venket Rao, a professor and researcher at the University of Toronto's Department of Nutritional Sciences, saponins which generally pass through our digestive system without being absorbed--bind onto the cholesterol that we eat. Then the two make their exit together, lowering cholesterol levels."

Rao and his colleagues believe the saponins may even help prevent colon cancer. Normally, bile acid pours into the stomach to help absorb fats from foods. Some bacteria in the large intestine turn the bile into a substance that is highly carcinogenic. That's why a high-fat diet increases the risk of colon cancer. Research suggests that when saponins travel through, they stop the toxic material from forming.

The evidence of saponins' benefits is so compelling that several pharmaceutical companies are already designing saponin-based drugs to lower cholesterol and to enhance the effectiveness of vaccines

This study was undertaken to observe the effects of the blend of partially purified Yucca schidigera and Quillaja saponaria extracts on cholesterol levels in the human's blood and gastrointestinal functions, and to determine if a new cholesterol-lowering drug can be developed by the further purification of the extracts. Ultrafiltration and sequential diafiltration increased the amounts of steroidal saponin in aqueous yucca extract and terpenoid saponin in aqueous quillaja extract from 9.3% and 21.4% to 17.2% and 61.8%, respectively. Taking 0.9 mg of the blend (6:4, v:v) of the resulting filtrates a day for 4 weeks resulted in the decreases in total and LDL cholesterol levels in blood plasma of hyper-cholesterolemic patients with enhancement in gastrointestinal symptoms of patients.

“There is now a substantial body of evidence that dietary saponins can lower plasma cholesterol concentrations. They act either directly, by inhibiting absorption of cholesterol from the small intestine, or indirectly, by inhibiting reabsorption of bile acids. Where direct inhibition of cholesterol absorption occurs, saponins could prevent absorption not only of a high proportion of dietary cholesterol, but also a high proportion of the cholesterol derived from bile and the desquamatior, of mucosal cells.”

“Milk and meat meals of the Masai of Kenya and Tanzania would terrify an American fearing cholesterol and heart disease. Yet Masai cholesterol levels are one-third lower than the U.S. average, and heart disease is almost unknown." New research offers a clue: Masai also eat a soup laced with bitter bark and roots that contain cholesterol-lowering substances called saponins.

“Masai don't worry about cholesterol; it's a non-issue to them. And they love fat,” says Timothy Johns of McGill University in Montreal. Supporting his findings, studies show that urban Masai without access to the bitter plants do develop heart disease.”

“Yucca saponin extract was tested on 149 patients at the California center. Most of the patients later felt less pain, stiffness, and swelling in their joints. Others also received additional benefits, such as, migraine relief, lower blood pressure, and cholesterol/triglyceride reduction. Dr. Bingham believes that the saponins aid digestion and absorption of fats. They also work as cleansing substances which help prevent absorption of harmful bacteria and protozoa from the bowel that cause the stiffness and inflammation in the joints, he says. These compounds also appear to improve circulation”
